Friday Five # 1

Every Friday, I’ll be sharing my favorite things from around the web.

Growing up in the 90’s means I have a strong a strong nostalgia for all things 90’s—especially music. Eve 6 was the soundtrack of 8th-grade. The lead singer has started a new band with a former member of AWOLNATION and so far I’m really digging what they’re putting out. Caution: there is profanity and millennials may not enjoy it. Fitness – Get Dead

I’m holding steady on one episode a week of 13 Reasons Why. If you’re a survivor of suicide or lost a loved one to suicide, this show on Netflix is worth watching and talking about. A friend shared this article written by the National Association of School Psychologists and I really felt like they provided some excellent talking points beyond overprotective mother’s hoping to ignore the topic of suicide.

One Perfect Lie by Lisa Scottoline has been difficult to put down. The synopsis inside the jacket cover had me intrigued.

On paper, Chris Brennan looks perfect. He’s applying for a job as a high school government teacher, he’s ready to step in as an assistant baseball coach, and his references are impeccable. But everything about Christ Brennan is a lie.

This sangria recipe using Vina Robles Red4, a delicious red blend of wine. Pick up a bottle and try to tell me this sangria isn’t delicious. It’s seriously been giving me life as I fight an irritating spring cold that just won’t go away.

  • 1 bottle RED4
  • 1/4 cup Brandy
  • 1/2 cup Triple Sec
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/2 cup lemon juice
  • 1 cup club soda
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons pomegranate juice
  • 2 cups chopped fruit – blackberries, cherries, red grapes, plums

In a pitcher, combine all of the ingredients and stir. Refrigerate until the drink is chilled and the flavors are blended 8 to 12 hours. Serve the sangria in chilled, ice-filled wine glasses.

Finally, in honor of Chris Cornell, two of my favorite songs Sunshower and Burden in My Hand.

Hi, I’m Rae. I’m a legal contract specialist for a biotechnology company, lover of all things beautiful and delicious. Here on Simply Rae, I blog about whatever’s on my mind. Some days that may be the delicious meal I prepared for my husband and I, other days it’s beauty related. Writing has always been therapeutic for me. Originally when I went to college, I went with the intention of becoming a writer. What my 18-year old self didn’t realize was I didn’t need to go to college to write, I needed life experiences for stories. After college I found myself doing event coordinating for a while, which at first I really loved and wanted to make a career out of it; the novelty didn’t last very long and back to college I went. Recently I’ve gotten married and relocated to a new, unfamiliar city. One night not too long ago, I found myself wide awake at four a.m. unable to sleep or turn off my brain. For the first time in years, I turned on my computer and started writing whatever came to mind. After all these years, I’m finally inspired and have life experiences to share. It’s truly an exciting time! Aside from writing, I enjoy photography, wine tasting, pretending to be a skillful cook and staying physically active. My husband and I are on the search for the perfect macaroni and cheese recipe, so if you happen to have a gem on your hands, send it my way!
